This was way too fun to pass up, or even let the required registration and potential onslaught of spam deter my curiosity. After all, who doesn't want to get an "objective" opinion of which celebrities they look like? So, here are mine run on a few different photos...
Adam Sandler, Keanu Reeves, Freddy Prinze Jr.... I suppose I can live with that. But Sarah Jessica Parker and Penelope Cruz? Now I know who to dress up as if I ever want to pursue a career as a waitress at the Trocadero.
This is true insanity. On June 14th, François Bon and Antoine Montant did the world's first speedflying descent of the Eiger in Switzerland. And here I thought those guys in the flying squirrel suits were nuts...
If you're like me, when Election Tuesday rolls around each year, you
may find it difficult to make sense of all the propositions on the
ballot. There are very few sources that give you a clear and succinct
summary of each prop, and the respective pro and con arguments. Worse
yet, it's virtually impossible to find a truly objective source that
doesn't obfuscate one or two key issues that may put a dent in the
armor of said source's arguments.
That's where my friend Craig comes in. Every year, he puts together
a pretty solid summary of the propositions, and discusses the interests
of all parties involved. He reserves his own personal commentary for
the more important issue of the relative "sexiness" of each issue.
For this year's guide to the California ballot measures, read the extended post below.
Every August, my thoughts inevitably wander to wistful memories of the prior ski season. No doubt this is due to the fact that in the Bay Area, August is the time of year when one begins to scout out a ski lease for the upcoming winter. The members of my ski house - the self-dubbed House o' Bums - have been skiing together now for the past eight years. We've never been in the same house twice, which means each year someone new (often a second-year "replacement" member) takes on the unenviable task of calling up real estate agents and vacation home brokers and slogging it up to Tahoe for two days of house tours while everyone else in the area is either reveling in a day hike, tubing on the lake or racing down the Sierra's unparalleled single-tracks.
Not surprisingly, the moniker "House o' Bums" does not really befit a group that includes talented, entrepreneurial software developers, budding lawyers, advertising mavens and even a naval flight instructor. Basically, folks who unlike the so-called bums they aspire to be actually invest themselves fully in their daily non-snowbound lives. The name instead reflects our collective passion for the fluffy white stuff, a near obsession that metamorphs us from hard-charging young professionals during the week to weekend versions of the lift operators you typically find at places like Vail and Whistler, minus the char-broiled tans and Latin American accents.
So, with nostalgia for winter fresh in my mind, here are a few clips from the winter of 2006 in Lake Tahoe. Most of these videos were taken with a Pure Digital disposable video camera. While a disposable video camera initially struck me as a brilliant innovation that certainly relieves the anxiety associated with toting around a multi-thousand dollar piece of electronic equipment at high-speed, it still leaves a lot to be desired in terms of resolution. Nevertheless, it gets the job done, and still captures the essence of what was an amazing winter. And I'm sure LCD screens will continue to get cheaper and these things will inevitably get better.
And as I've discovered, no matter how good or bad the skier or the quality of the video is, everyone looks awesome when you set them to music...
Check out video footage from a week-long trek in the Swiss and Italian Alps around Zermatt and Saas-Fee this past winter. Ascents of 14,000-meter peaks included the Strahlhorn, Allalinhorn, Alphubel, and Breithorn.
A place for my own ramblings, like every other blogger in the blogosphere. From my perspective as a native and proud New Jerseyan, who happened to fall in love with California ten years ago. It's a trite and true story.
Anyway, as interesting thoughts enter my mind, I will hopefully take the time to share them. And perhaps - an even longer longshot - others will take take the time to read them...
